Every week of the challenge includes:

  • One hour-long recorded lesson to be watched at your convenience (see full course outline)

  • 5 mindful writing sessions, each consisting of a 10-minute meditation (reinforcing the lesson of the week) and 50 minutes of writing time

  • One day off (because rest is good for us)

Meet The Instructor

April Dávila is an award-winning fiction writer and meditation teacher certified by the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California Berkeley. She designed the 6-Week Mindful Writers Challenge to share the myriad ways that meditation has facilitated her writing career. Class Outline

This six-week course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to Mindfulness 

    • An introduction to insight meditation​ for those who are new to the practice (or could use a review).

  • Meeting Our Inner Critic With Kindness

    • We will discuss the science of reactivity in our human brains. We will name our inner critics, and learn to quiet them with kindness.​

  • Exploring the Minds of Our Characters

    • ​We can use our understanding of our own patterned responses to understand our characters’ motivation and write relatable, sympathetic individuals.

  • Getting Emotional Resonance on the Page

    • We will explore our own emotions and practice sitting with them so that we might better write emotional scenes with empathy and precision. ​

  • Dealing With Writer's Block​

    • Banish writer's block by taking a closer look at what is keeping you from writing. ​

  • Putting Our Inner Critic To Work

    • Having made friends with our inner critic, we can put it to work where it works best - as a top-notch editor.  ​

  • Find Equanimity in the Writer's Live

    • How to deal with rejections and keep writing​
